Master Troubleshooting & Diagnostics Matrix

Error Code / IndicatorSymptom / MeaningPossible CauseStep-by-Step DIY FixSuggested Actions
1
No Flame Detected / Red LED flashes 1 time
No gas supply, empty gas bottle, or blockage in the gas line
Confirm the gas bottle has gas in it and that the gas line isn't blocked. Below 5°C, propane should be used rather than butane. To clear the lockout: on the SH2211, switch 'Fan Only' on, off and back on inside 2.5 seconds; on the SH2201, SC2201, SH2202, SC2202 and SC2211, switch the 12V supply off and back on at the vehicle's master switch. Up to 4 more attempts are allowed. If it still won't clear, on the SH2211 switch the heater off, check it over and power it up again before retrying; on the other models press the heater's red Reset Button once.
DIY Safe
2
Overheat / Red LED flashes 2 times
Blocked or restricted air ducts and vents
Check that the air ducts and vents aren't blocked or restricted, then leave the heater to cool for at least 5-10 minutes before pressing its Reset Button once.
DIY Safe
3
Low/High Supply Voltage / Red LED flashes 3 times
Supply voltage outside of operating range (10V-15V DC, or below 11.5V DC when high electric setting is used)
Measure the battery voltage - if it's within the 11.5V-15V range, check the wiring between the heater and the battery, and check the alternator or external charger. If that doesn't resolve it, get in touch with an authorised service agent.
DIY Check / Tech Fallback
4
Combustion Air Fault / Red LED flashes 4 times
Blockage in combustion air inlet flue or exhaust flue
Inspect the exhaust flue and the flue for combustion air for any blockage.
DIY Safe
5 to 11
Other / Internal Fault (Thermistor fault, Flame simulation fault, Relay sense fault, Start-up fault, Configuration fault, Switch fault)
Internal system or component fault
Try clearing the lockout by cycling the power or pressing the Reset Button. If the fault won't clear, get in touch with Whale Support or arrange for a specialist to carry out repairs.
DIY Check / Tech Fallback
Solid
General Fault / Solid Red LED or all bars lit
Either two faults happened simultaneously, or the lockout has failed to clear after more than five attempts
Clear lockout as described in the manual. If unsuccessful, contact an authorised service agent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I clear a lockout on my Whale Space Heater?

The exact clearing procedure depends on which control panel your vehicle has. On a Whale Space Heater Control Panel paired with the SH2211 model, cycle the 'Fan Only' setting ooff and back on within 2.5 seconds - you can try this up to 4 more times if needed. On a Whale Space Heater or Duo Control Panel used with any of the other heaters covered here (SH2201, SC2201, SH2202, SC2202, SC2211), a lockout shown as 1, 3, 4 or 5 flashes/bars clears when you switch the DC power off, then on, using the master switch, again with up to 4 retries - if it still won't clear, press the heater's Reset Button once.

A lockout shown as 2 flashes/bars (Overheat) only needs a single press of the Reset Button. On a Whale iVan Control Panel, simply follow the on-screen prompt, which will tell you to either cycle the master switch or press the Reset Button once. Whichever panel you have, make sure the fan has fully stopped before cycling the power, or you risk triggering an overheat lockout - and if none of this clears the fault, contact Whale Support.

Q: Can I fit a Heat Air heater myself?

If you're technically minded, yes - each Heat Air kit includes a detailed step-by-step installation guide. Otherwise, a local motorhome workshop should be able to fit it for you. Whoever fits it, a qualified gas engineer has to certify any gas work to BS EN 1949-2011.

Q: Which Heat Air model should I choose?

The models differ in heat output and fuel type, with options for both campervans and panel-van conversions - broadly, the bigger the vehicle, the more output you'll want. Gas-only suits off-grid touring; if you mostly stay on sites with hook-up, the gas-and-electric version adds 3kW of electric heating.

Q: Will Heat Air work when I'm off-grid?

Yes. Every Heat Air model can run on gas, and on its low gas setting it draws very little from the battery - as little as 0.6 A.
