The smoke alarm chirps audibly every 40 seconds, signalling a low power pack

Possible cause: The power pack no longer has sufficient capacity for the smoke alarm to operate correctly.. Fit a new smoke alarm straight away. The chirping warning carries on for at least a week, but leave it any longer and the unit may not have enough power left to genuinely warn you if a fire breaks out.
