Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many charge cycles will a Dometic PLB40 give?

Its lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry is rated for 2,000 charge cycles, against around 500 for a lead-acid battery.

Q: Can a PLB40 be charged from my vehicle's 12V (cigarette lighter) socket?

Yes - it has a built-in 8A smart DC-DC charger, so it can charge straight from a 12V socket in the vehicle.

Q: Why choose lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) over other battery types?

LiFePO4 batteries lose very little charge when left unused, hold a steady 12V output, and store more energy for their size and weight than other chemistries, which makes them well suited to portable use. They're a safe chemistry that copes with harsh temperatures, and the built-in battery management system (BMS) protects against overcharging, deep discharge, and running too hot or too cold. They're rated for up to 2,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge.

Q: Can a PLB40 replace a dual-battery set-up?

It can charge from the vehicle's 12V socket while it powers a CFX or other powered cool box at the same time - and because it's portable, you can take it out of the vehicle to run the cool box wherever you are, such as on a pitch, at the beach, or at a barbecue.

Q: What's the largest inverter I can run from a PLB40?

150W inverter.

Q: Does very hot or cold weather affect the PLB40?

LiFePO4 batteries work across a wide temperature range. Dometic recommends charging the PLB40 between 0°C and +45°C, and using it (discharging) between -10°C and +55°C. Outside those ranges it will still work, but performance may drop.

Q: Which solar panels work with the PLB40?

Dometic has tested panels from Goal Zero, Renogy, Overland Solar and Flexopower. Use a panel with an 8-25V DC output, rated at 180W or less, and don't fit a separate charge controller - the PLB40 has its own DC-DC charger, and an extra controller can stop the panel producing power. The PLB40's 12V input is a grey SB50 Anderson connector. Check compatibility with your panel's manufacturer too.

Q: What battery protection setting should I use with a PLB40?

Set your Dometic powered cool box's battery protection to 'Low' when running it from a PLB40.

Q: How should I store a PLB40?

Store it fully charged and top it up at least every 6 months - it loses around 3-5% of its charge per month.

Q: What fuse does the PLB40 take?

20A 3AG glass slow-blow fuse.

Q: Can I jump-start my vehicle or charge its battery from a PLB40?

It isn't designed for jump-starting. It can, however, supply another battery through its 12V output, at up to 15 amps.

Q: Does the PLB40 need a solar regulator or charge controller?

No - its built-in smart DC-DC charger means you can connect a solar panel directly, as long as the panel supplies 8-25V DC and no more than 8A.

Q: What kind of DC-DC charge controller is built into the PLB40?

A PWM (pulse-width modulation) type.

Q: How long will a CFX cool box run from a PLB40?

Look up your CFX model's energy use (in Ah) on Dometic's website and divide the PLB40's 40Ah capacity by it to get the approximate run time in hours. To make the charge go further, keep the cool box well filled, open the lid as little as possible, and leave plenty of space around its vents.

Q: How long is the PLB40's warranty?

2 years.

Q: Can charging a PLB40 from the 12V socket flatten my vehicle battery?

The PLB40 takes 8-25V on its DC input, and it carries on charging until it's full or until the supply falls below 8V.
