TV reception very poor
Incorrect amplifier gain, incorrect antenna alignment, or wrong polarity.
Turn the amplifier gain fully up (clockwise), check the antenna's pointed at the transmitter, and confirm its polarity (horizontal or vertical) is set correctly. Bypass the amplifier using Short Hook-Up Test 1 and retune the TV.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I set up and troubleshoot the TV aerial system?ⓘ

Start by loosening off the mast's locking collar and winding the antenna up, work out whether the local signal is horizontal or vertical and position the dome accordingly, then switch the amplifier on (its LED should light) and wind the gain fully clockwise. Rotate the mast until you find the transmitter, retune the TV, then lock the mast collar back down by hand.

If reception is poor, work through the amplifier's own checks in order: confirm every coaxial connector is wired correctly and uses a decent-quality plug; check the coaxial cable isn't kinked, pinched, or coiled up (which can distort the picture); if the amplifier's LED won't light, check it has power and that the polarity is correct; and if a strong signal is causing picture break-up, wind the gain back down anticlockwise.

Two isolation tests can narrow down a fault further: connecting the TV straight to the amplifier (bypassing the rest of the wiring) tells you if the fault's in the cabling to the TV outlet, while connecting the TV straight to the antenna (bypassing the amplifier) tells you if the amplifier itself is at fault.
